School Safety Issues

SRMS received a visit from our fire and safety inspector.  We received a few citations with which parents can help us:

1.  Drive all the way through the car loop to the student drop off area at the sidewalk before you allow your student to exit the car.  It takes just a minute longer (literally) and will prevent your son or daughter from being hit by a car when walking through the parking lot.  Please do not drop your student in a random area within the parking lot.

2.  No cars are to park in the drop off area.  The safety inspector noted that parents were parking their cars and leaving them.  This area is reserved for emergency vehicles.  If an ambulance or fire truck were needed at the school, that vehicle would pull up to those areas.  That area needs to be kept clear.

3. Be observant driving along SunRidge Boulevard, turning in and out of the school, and remain aware while driving through the parking lot.  Save your cell phone calls and texts for later.

Thank you for your attention to the safety of our students before and after school.

OCPS Policy for Campus Supervision

ORANGE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS (OCPS) SUPERVISION POLICY, Pursuant to FSS1003.31

OCPS employees are not responsible for supervising students who arrive on school grounds more than 30 minutes before school and 30 minutes before a school-sponsored activity is scheduled to begin. For SunRidge Middle School, this means that students should arrive to school no earlier than 9 a.m. each day.  This includes the arrival of walkers and bicycle riders; additionally, car riders should not be dropped off before 9:00 a.m.  This is for the safety of your student because this is when the supervision of our campus begins.

OCPS employees are not responsible for supervising students remaining on school grounds more than 30 minutes after school and 30 minutes after the school sponsored activity ends. For SunRidge Middle School, students should leave campus immediately upon dismissal at 3: 50 p.m. each day (and 2:50 on Wednesdays), and students who are car-riders should be picked up before 4:20 daily (3:20 on Wednesdays).  Our front office closes at 4:30 p.m.  Consequently, if you are not here to pick up your student by 4:20 p.m. each day, you will need to complete the application for your son or daughter to report to Boys and Girls Club until you arrive.

OCPS is not responsible for supervising students not in attendance at school, or students not authorized to participate in school-sponsored activities. Casual or incidental contact between OCPS personnel and students on school grounds shall not result in a duty to supervise students. Parents or guardians should not rely on OCPS employees to provide supervision for their child outside of the above time period, 9:00 a.m. -4:20 p.m.

Unless your student is enrolled in our before-school extended day program or if your student is provided a pass to be on campus to work directly with a teacher for tutoring or an extra-curricular activity, there is no supervision of students before 9:00 a.m.

Thank you for your support to your student and to our school.

Social Media Notice

Attention Students and Parents:

Ten years ago there was no social media. Today, there are billions of people using it. Unfortunately, a number of OCPS students use it without considering the consequences of their intentional or casual posts that pose a danger to schools and people. I commend the students who report threatening social media posts to their schools. They are helping the district which actively monitors social media for content that could disrupt school activities or threaten the safety of students and staff.

Today, I ask you to review the published OCPS social media awareness guidelines on our website ocps.net student page. Thank you. And remember, if you “see something, say something.”

Additional items to note:

Please check the district website (www.ocps.net) for updates about severe weather that could be headed our way.  If schools are closed, the notice should appear on the homepage in an area set aside for weather alerts.  News stations will be notified of this as well.  You may be contacted through Connect Orange, depending on when the decision is made.

Please review the district policy for arrival and dismissal time.  SunRidge is in compliance with district policies as well as the state law for student supervision.  Please adhere to the directions below for the safety of your student.
